Claudia Gail Newton, 65, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, passed away on October 11, 2013, after visits and sentiments of love from family and friends. Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Corky moved to Alexandria, Louisiana as a child, then later to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Corky graduated as valedictorian of LaGrange High School and went on to major in math at Tulane University (Newcomb College) in New Orleans. After college, Corky had a long and successful career at Brown & Williamson in Louisville, Kentucky, during which she climbed from computer programmer to Executive Vice President. After an early retirement in 2001, Corky and her husband spent their winters in Naples, Florida where she enjoyed running, playing tennis, and going to the beach. Corky was loving, charming, smart, logical, competitive, loyal, and had a great sense of humor. Most of all, Corky loved, and was devoted to her family.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Lowell Newton; mother, Leona Painter Avner; two children, Ted Newton (fiancé, Abby Gipe) and Natalie Newton Nathanson (spouse, Jeff); two grandchildren, Hank & Charlotte Nathanson; sister, Kerri Avner Pepper; brother, Roger Avner; and cousins, including Karlyn Painter Greenberg (spouse, Jerry); nieces, Margaux & Miranda Pepper; loving dog, Honey Bear; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Henry Avner.
A Memorial Visitation will be from 4:30 PM to 7 PM Monday, October 14, 2013 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Her Memorial Service will immediately follow at 7 PM.
