Clarence Andrew "Sid" Hartlage, Sr., 96, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. A proud veteran of the United States Army, Sid's life was a testament to his commitment to service and community. He was the founder of Hartlage Fencing Company, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and entrepreneurship.
Born on February 20, 1929, in Louisville, Kentucky, Sid was the son of Ernest and Emma (Stuber) Hartlage. Along with his parents, Sid was preceded in death by his wife, Ella (Lumpkins) Hartlage; children, Rhonda, Tami, and Clarence Hartlage, Jr.; as well as siblings Rosemary O'Neil, Estelle Greenwell, Ernest, and Julius Hartlage.
Sid was a man of many passions. In his younger years, he delighted in traveling the world on fishing and hunting trips that allowed him to explore his love for the great outdoors. He was also a dedicated sports fan, proudly supporting the University of Louisville women's basketball team, the Kentucky Wildcats, and the New York Yankees. Sid especially enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their various endeavors.
A member of Boys Town Nebraska, Disabled American Veterans, and the National VFW, Sid's commitment to his country and fellow veterans was unwavering, and he was distinguished with the honor of being named a Kentucky Colonel.
As the patriarch of a large family, Sid cherished the relationships he built with his loved ones. He is survived by his children, Michael Hartlage, Terri Hartlage Zink, and Linda Whitlock (William "Bill"); 8 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored and took great pride in. Additionally, he leaves behind his siblings, Kenneth Hartlage (Mary) and Emarita Leitner, along with numerous generations of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and on Thursday after 9:00 a.m. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at St. John Paul II Catholic Church (2253 W. St. Joe Road, Sellersburg). Following the mass, Sid will receive military honors during his burial at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
