Cheryl Kay Matthews, died January 20, 2025, at age 68, after a long battle with stroke and vascular dementia.
Cheryl was born February 18, 1956 to David Lee and Joyce Ann Meurer at Fort Carson, Colorado. She was the oldest of three children, including her sister Karla Sue Johnson of Colorado Springs and Richard Dwight Meurer, deceased in 2003. Cheryl was preceded in death by her mother, Joyce in 2009 and her father David in 2022.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, David Lee Matthews of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, her children to include Christopher David Matthews of Clarksville, Indiana and his wife Missy; Andrea Michelle Adams, husband Benjamin Adams and son Finnick Matthew Adams of Evansville, Indiana; Joshua Daniel Matthews of Floyds Knobs; and Nathanael Dwight Matthews, wife Bailey Hinton Matthews and daughter Lincoln Elanor Matthews of Greenwood, Indiana. Dave and Cheryl have four children and two grandchildren.
Cheryl grew up in the Meurer family, who moved many times to such places as Colorado Springs, Colorado; Fresno, California; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Pueblo, Colorado. She worked for her father as a teen in the tourism and real estate business in Colorado Springs and later for her grandfather, Dwight Foster, owner and founder of Colorado Springs Title Company. She graduated with honors from Palmer High School in Colorado Springs and did undergraduate studies at El Paso Community College, also in Colorado Springs.
On June 3, 1976 Dave and Cheryl were married in the chapel of the US Air Force Academy one day after Dave’s graduation. The moving lifestyle of her youth prepared her for moving with Dave in the Air Force to Enid, Oklahoma, Lakenheath, UK, England, Clovis, New Mexico, Bracknell and High Wycombe, England, and Wichita Falls, Texas. Cheryl worked part time occasionally as a legal secretary and volunteered as a receptionist at Graceland Baptist Church.
In 1995, when Dave retired from the Air Force and began a 22 year career at United Parcel Service, Cheryl and the four children followed him to live the rest of her life, first in Greenville, Indiana and most recently in Navilleton, Indiana. While Dave traveled extensively for UPS, Cheryl did the greatest job in the world raising their four children. Their success, honesty, integrity and love for the Lord can largely be attributed to Cheryl’s success as an outstanding mother.
Cheryl and Dave volunteered as members of the Floyd County Republican Party for many years. Cheryl served as Vice Chairman of the Party, Vice Precinct Committeeman, Greenville Township Board Member and the Floyd County Republican Party Women’s Group. They both attended for several years each Greenville Christian Church, Cornerstone Community Church and Graceland Church, all here in the local area. Cheryl sang in the choir, helped teach, displayed her art skills for the church and as previously mentioned, served temporarily as a receptionist.
Cheryl’s favorite Bible verse was Psalm 37:4, “Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give thee the desires of your heart.” Her life was marked by bringing that promise to life every day she lived.
