Catherine Griffith passed away February 26, 2023 of natural causes. She was born in Wappingers Falls, NY, the 10th child of George Semack of Budapest, Hungary and Edna DeNee.
Katie lived in Wappingers Falls until she graduated, then moved to Poughkeepsie, NY. She joined the Navy and served as medic in the Women's Reserves. In Poughkeepsie she also met her future husband, Gene Griffith who was working for IBM. They married in 1948 and were later transferred to Lexington, KY.
For the next 65 years, she lived on a lovely street off North Broadway that was very family friendly, and provided a lot of great activities for her sons Howard and Brian.
She worked as a florist for Howard and Heafey and later became a Master Gardener. Her own yard was full of beautiful landscaping. She used her knowledge for customers too and did some work for Keenland racetrack. Katie was a lifelong learner. She and her husband took classes in woodworking, upholstery and ceramics. She was a skilled seamstress who sewed for local shops and also knitted and spun her own wool on her spinning wheel.
The entire family liked the outdoors and took vacations to Canada and Gene's home in Pennsylvania. Even though Katie was blessed with only one grandchild, she and Gene enjoyed many activities with Max at his school, the zoo and his soccer games. She instilled in him his love for animals- especially cats.
Adventurous, she took a hot air balloon ride at age 70. At age 80 she accompanied her daughter-in-law for Monica's first sky diving experience. She enjoyed the ride up to 10,000 feet but wasn't sure she could do the landing!
Not shy about news and politics, she said her only misery the past few years was Trump being elected.
In late 2019, she was convinced to accept some help and moved to Louisville. She resided at Traditions at Beaumont personal care home. She enjoyed her balcony there and being surrounded by plants and her books. Thanks to the lovely staff there and hospice the last few months.
In Lexington, she is remembered by close friends and neighbors who assisted her over the years to live independently. They include Darryl and Sara Woolums, Joyce and Marvin Best, and Jody and Linville Puckett.
In Louisville, she is remembered by close friends especially Jan and Denny Ransdell who helped her over the years and to move.
She leaves behind her sons Howard Griffith (Monica) of Louisville; Brian Griffith of Cottage Grove Oregon; grandson Maxwell Griffith of Cincinnati, Ohio; nieces Bonnie Weaver of Wallingford PA and Becky Kaag of Hershey PA.
