Carol Ray Payton, 70, of Louisville, Kentucky, born October 1, 1952 in Shelbyville, Kentucky, returned to his Heavenly Father on the afternoon of August 10, 2023 at the Veterans Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky with his family by his side. He was the son of Robert and Viola Payton and the brother of George Payton who preceded him in death. Carol is survived by the loves of his life, his wife of 32 years, Sandra "Sandy" Churchman Payton, and his faithful Cocker Spaniel, Lizzie Rae, his daughter, Autumn Dulin, niece Candi (John) Broughton, nephew Robby (Kadee) Payton, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-nieces, 1 great nephew, and 1 great great nephew.
Carol proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He enjoyed sports and was a avid fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats, the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Celtics. He loved playing softball and was immensely proud of his World Championship ring they won in Daytona. Carol loved Belgin Draft Horses and enjoyed friendships with those who pulled and cared for them. He sought out the best fishing holes and had a green thumb when it came to growing tomatoes. The annual candy run to Amish Country was a favorite time of the year for him. Carol had a profound love and respect for the original Twelve Step Program which he was a 38 year member.
A celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm on Saturday September 30th at the Pleasureville Baptist Church Fellowship Hall ( 2749 Hillspring Rd, Pleasureville, KY 40057). Military honors will take place the same day at 4:00 pm at the fellowship hall.
