HUGHES, CAROL B., 88, passed away March 31, 2012 in Louisville.
She was the daughter of the late John L. and Mara R. Breitenstein of Louisville and was a lifelong resident of the city.
She graduated from the University of Louisville in 1944 with a B.A. in chemistry and music, working at Girdler Chemical Co. as a chemist for several years.
Mrs. Hughes' passions in life were her family and music. She was an accomplished violinist, playing in the Louisville Orchestra for more than 45 years, including the 1950 Carnegie Hall concert in NYC. She was instrumental in the development of the Suzuki Violin Program in Louisville at the U of L Preparatory Department, serving as a beloved teacher of hundreds of children in Louisville and at workshops around the United States.
Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband, James Coleman Hughes Jr. and is survived by their two daughters, Carol H. Whitman, of Fernandina Beach, FL and Laura H. Wagner (Doug), of Louisville; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Hughes' life will be held at 11 a.m on Saturday April 14, 2012 at her church, Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church, 318 W Saint Catherine St Louisville, KY., with visitation after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.
