Carl F. Ems, 92, of Borden, Indiana, passed away Monday morning, September 27, 2010. Carl farmed with his wife, Edith, and raised acres of strawberries and pumpkins among many crops on one of the first U-pick and no-till farms in the area. He was one of the first land conservation farmers in the region. Carl also was an expert carpenter and homebuilder and helped build St. Mary's Navilleton Parish Hall over 50 years ago. His home and farm were the source of education and experience in good work ethics and loyalty to family and friends for his children and many nieces and nephews. Carl was a long-time member of St. Mary's Navilleton Church, Floyds Knobs, Indiana.
Carl was born on August 9, 1918 in New Salisbury, Indiana to the late Jacob and Mary (Buechler) Ems. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Edith M. (Smith) Ems and his daughter, Sharon (Ems) Thomas.
He is survived by sons, Steve Ems and his wife, Evy of Sloatsburg, New York, Jake Ems and his wife, Susie, and Ted Ems and his wife, Denise, all of Floyds Knobs; daughters, Carol McMillin and her husband, Bobby of Fredericksburg, Indiana, Linda Jones and her husband, Jim, and Dotti Whitaker, all of Georgetown, Indiana, and Cindy Ems Mills and her husband, Duke Mills of Borden; 23 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 12 to 7 PM Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Friday, October 1 at St. Mary's Navilleton Catholic Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
