Bettye Jeanne Miller

La Grange, Kentucky

Bettye Jeanne Miller, a dedicated educator and beloved member of the Louisville community, passed away on January 26, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on October 23, 1931, in Louisville, Kentucky, she spent her life enriching the lives of countless students as an elementary teacher with the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), where she embarked on her career at Rutherford Elementary and concluded at Franklin Elementary.

Bettye graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Fairdale High School and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Louisville. Her commitment to education was matched only by her devotion to her family and friends. She is survived by her children, Cynthia Barker (Gerald), Patricia Winter (Stephen), Giles David Miller (Amy), Daniel Miller (Gina), and Gregory Miller (Marsha). Bettye also leaves behind her siblings, Joe McGreevy, Mary Neil Zerkel, and Charles McGreevy.

Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Marc, Giles, Francesca, Morgan, Rachel, Andrew, Jacqueline, Matthew, and David, as well as her great-grandchildren, Leon, Claire, Noah, Issac, Penelope, Graham, Braxton and Liam; as well as numerous step-grandchildren. Together, they carry forward the values and love she instilled in them.

Bettye was previously a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and later St. John's Lutheran Church in Louisville. She was known for her love of dancing and her enjoyment of playing cards with friends. Alongside her friends from "The Adventure Club," Bettye reveled in travel and found joy in exploring new adventures within the vibrant city of Louisville. She enjoyed spending her weekends at the lake with her family and friends. 

Bettye is preceded in death by her husband, Giles B Miller; her mother, Lula McGreevy; her father, Jackson Sams; her grandparents, Charles and Cordelia Eggen; and her sister, Frances Thompson.

The visitation for Bettye Jeanne Miller will be held on February 1, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, East Louisville, located at 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243. The funeral service will follow at the same location, beginning at 12:00 PM with burial following at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. 

Bettye’s indelible spirit and commitment to her family and friends will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. The family appreciates the love and care provided by her caregiver, Sheila Young. Donations in Bettye’s memory can be made to Hosparus of Louisville.
