Betty Mae Stockdale

January 29, 1932 — February 24, 2023

Betty Mae Broyles-Stockdale, age 91, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2023, with family by her side. A Pulaski County native, she was born at home in Plato, Kentucky on January 29, 1932. Betty Mae would later move with her family to Science Hill. She graduated from Science Hill High School. During high school she worked at Newberry's Five & Dime Candy Shop.

After attending Berea College, she moved to Louisville where she met her husband of 65 years, William Edwin Stockdale. They would go on to have 5 children. She was a wonderful and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Betty Mae was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

She worked for Bell South (now AT&T) phone company where she retired after more than 40 wonderful years of service. She received numerous awards while working. She was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America and Communication Workers of America. After retiring, she continued to work by babysitting and taking care of several of her grandchildren.

Betty enjoyed sewing clothes, quilting, and collecting stamps. Some of her favorite memories were the times spent skiing the slopes of Paoli Peaks with her children. She loved to garden and travel. Betty Mae and her husband traveled all over the United States together. She appreciated the beauty of the countryside immensely. Through the years, she would spend many hours at Hounz Lane park. It was a place of both enjoyment and peace for her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Edwin Stockdale; granddaughter Brittany Stockdale (daughter of son, Greg); son-in-law Michael "Mickey" Lacy (husband of daughter, Monica); her parents, William Blanford and Ada Goff Broyles; Brothers Cloyd "Buddy" Broyles, William Blanford "Jack" Broyles Jr., and Hollis Brent Broyles; Sisters Estella Gallenstein, Jo Ann Vaught, and Angie Ethel Broyles; and three nephews, James Steven Broyles, James Timothy Burdine and John Robert Vaught; brother-in-law James "Jim" O. Burdine; and sister-in-law Bernice Broyles.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Rendell Edwin, Gregory Allen (Martha DeJaco), Donna Renee, Monica Lynn Lacy, and William Blanford (Jiashin); Aneth Tellez (former daughter-in-law);15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Donna Sue Burdine and Jerry Rae Dick (Louie); brothers, James M. Broyles and Harry A. Broyles (Shirley); and many nieces, and nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be 10:00am to 11:00am on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Newcomer Cremations Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243, with a celebration of Betty's life there at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Kentucky.
