Betty Perry

April 24, 1937 — March 23, 2025

Betty Perry, born Elizabeth Francis DeWitt on April 24, 1937, in Louisville, KY to Henry & Edith DeWitt, passed peacefully from this world on March 23, 2025, in Louisville, KY.

Betty grew up in Big Clifty and was a student at Clarkson High School until 1954 when she married the love of her life, Darrell Perry. She later graduated from the American School in 1956. Betty achieved her fondest dream of becoming a mother at the young age of 17. She was preceded in death by her husband Darrell and her son Kent. Betty is survived by her other children: Lisa (Terry) Whitehouse, Leslie Perry, Dale Perry (Meryl Douglas), and Neil Perry (Carmen Milen); her four grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Jeffry Whitehouse, Jason (Tonya) Whitehouse, Michael Shearer and Allison (Mylo Obrikis) Shearer, as well as two treasured great-grandsons Jon (Madison) Whitehouse and Jack (Becca Heller) Whitehouse. She is also survived by her adored nieces and nephews, as well as her beloved church family and many friends.

Betty travelled to all 50 United States with Darrell and was a friend to everyone she met along the way. She and Darrell belonged to Overdale Global Methodist Church where they faithfully served the Lord. Betty loved water skiing in her younger days and took up snow skiing in her later years. She had many talents including sewing, tole painting, basket weaving, crocheting, and knitting. Betty was a voracious reader who found her perfect job in 1978 driving the Bookmobile for Scott County KY. She took classes to become certified to provide library services and, though Betty never showed it, she later admitted to being nervous about driving the large hulking vehicle on the curvy & often one-lane roads to bring books to childcare centers, nursing homes, schools, and rural patrons throughout the county. In 1985 Betty was quoted as saying, “I love to read them , I love to talk about them, I love to get other people - especially little ones - interesting in reading books …Driving the Bookmobile … really makes a difference in the lives of a lot of people. That makes me feel good.” Her love of books continued throughout her life.

Betty’s family wants to thank Wesley Manor for the wonderful care she received there during her final days.

To celebrate Betty's life there will be a gathering at Overdale Global Methodist Church on April 4, 2025, beginning at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Overdale Global Methodist Church, 515 Overdale Drive, Louisville, KY 40229.
