Betty J. Higgs, a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, left this world on January 11, 2025, surrounded by her loving family in New Albany, Indiana. She was born on May 17, 1948, in Richardsville, Kentucky, where her journey began, leading her through a life filled with compassion, dedication, and love.
Betty's passion for helping others led her to pursue a career in nursing. After graduating from Richardsville High School in 1966, she furthered her education at Jefferson Community College, obtaining her Associate's degree in nursing. For over 20 years, she served as a registered nurse for VA Hospitals in Louisville, where her kindness and expertise touched the lives of countless veterans and their families, showcasing her unwavering commitment to care.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Betty cherished the time spent with her family. Christmas was her favorite time of year, particularly enjoying the beauty of snow. She found great joy in gardening, showcasing her green thumb, and watching birds at her feeders, immersing herself in nature’s simple pleasures. Her family was everything to her, and she reveled in the moments shared with her grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Betty is survived by her husband, Charles Higgs, Sr.; her children, Charles Higgs, Jr. and Michelle (Nic) Nakamura; her grandchildren, Aaron Basham, Cody Higgs, Ashley Higgs, Charles Higgs, III, and Zander Nakamura; and her great-grandchildren, Jaedyn, Sadie, and Stella. She is also survived by her sister, Lavon Henken, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom will carry her legacy of love and generosity in their hearts.
Betty is reunited in spirit with her parents, Eddie and Leodie Fields; her brothers, Dallas Fields, Alfred Fields, and Pete Fields; and her sisters, Ann Bastin, Dorothy Higgs, and Mary Fields. She leaves behind a profound sense of love and warmth that will remain etched in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
