Barbara R. Hoffman

September 15, 1927 — November 7, 2020

Barbara R. Hoffman, née Rundell, died peacefully on Saturday, November 7, 2020. She was born to the late Roy Christy and Gladys Poole Rundell on September 15, 1927 in Greenville, Pennsylvania. A graduate of William Penn High School, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Buffalo and did graduate work at the University of Florida and the University of Colorado. She and her husband James ("Jim") Z. Hoffman met when they were both working in Kansas City; they married on November 21, 1959. The following year, they quit their jobs to travel around Europe for three months. Upon their return, Barbara and Jim lived in Northern California where their two children, Elizabeth C. Hoffman and Zan Hoffman, were born. Traveling with Jim's job as a Vice President of Reliance Universal, Barb taught history and English at high schools in New York state, Florida, Kansas, California and Kentucky. The family (with dog Fang) lived for three years in Hyderabad, A.P., India, where Barbara fully appreciated the culture, cuisine, art and people.

In her adopted hometown of Louisville, Barbara was an active volunteer on many boards and committees, bringing her talents, taste, humor and enthusiasm (but not sewing skill!) to organizations including Louisville Children's Theater/StageOne, J.B. Speed Art Museum, KET, Farmington Historic Home, and the Kentucky Opera. She became an entrepreneur, starting her own Business Etiquette firm that allowed her, as she put it, to "crusade for couth," conducting training for companies nationwide. She loved her family; traveled extensively; enjoyed the arts, reading and learning; had a marvelous smile, laugh and sense of humor; and fostered many wonderful friendships.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband Jim in 2002. In addition to her children, she is survived by sister Jean Harrell, nephews Jon Harrell and Hank Harrell, and her granddaughter Mariana Wilson.

Barb will be laid to rest at Cave Hill Cemetery in a private service.
