Augustus "Gus" Emanuel Harrison, age 91 of Louisville, Kentucky returned to his Heavenly Father on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Valhalla Post Acute Care Center. Gus was born May 21, 1932 in Olar, South Carolina to the late Lonnie Holmes Harrison and Estelle Ella (Still) Harrison. Gus graduated from Olar High School in Olar, South Carolina. He studied Art and Interior Design at the University of South Carolina where he received an Associate Degree. He served in the US Army in Japan, attached to the Surveying and Mapping Unit to rebuild roads in Japan. After his Army commitment, he worked at Park Aerial Surveys in Louisville, Kentucky. This is where he met his future wife, Barbara, and her brother, Frank O'Neal. During the oil shortages of the 1970s surveying was slow. To make ends meet Gus and Barbara opened their own business, Harrison's Custom Upholstery, reupholstering couches, chairs and making draperies in their basement. They were both members of Trinity United Church of Christ. Gus was also a talented artist. He painted the set for a live depiction of the Lord's Last Supper at Trinity. He and Barbara enjoyed square dancing with the Summer Sounds Square Dance Club. After Gus retired, he thoroughly enjoyed researching his family history, making lasting relationships with his many cousins along the way. Gus was also an avid gardener.
Gus was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Ann O'Neal Harrison; siblings, Ella Elizabeth Harrison, Lonnie H. Harrison, Jr., Grace Truman Harrison, Ruby "Toby" Merle Harrison, Juttie Still Harrison, Nina Brownie Harrison, Robertson "Bobby" Green Harrison and Eva Greta Harrison (Williams).
Gus leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Gail Cavanah (Steve) and Terri Harrison; grandchildren, Justin Cavanah (Kim), Andrew Cavanah (Lavinia), Travis Cavanah (Rebeca) and Allison Cavanah; as well as great-grandchildren, Ashton, Haley, Chloe, Evalyn and Rhya; and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
