Ann McLallen Petty (our "Nonnie"), 83, passed away September 20, 2023 at her home with family surrounding and holding her.
She was a powerhouse - straight-shooting, genuine, stoic, incredibly generous, positively gorgeous, a true style setter, funny, kind, and loved her family like no other. Nonnie was born in Louisville to Alice and Richard McLallen. The oldest of five children, she attended Kentucky Home and then Eastern High School, Wesleyan University in Connecticut and then University of Kentucky. At 19, she married the love of her life, her beloved husband of 44 years, Jack Petty. They enjoyed life tremendously and waited a bit to enjoy that life before having children. R. Lance Petty was her first born, followed by Joanna Petty Flanigan 15 months later. A terrific mother, she nurtured, disciplined, loved, and provided for them with joy and guidance. At 40, Ann and Jack were gifted with a little surprise - another bundle of joy, Samuel Lucas Petty.
Smart and intuitive, in 1977 Ann started a business and opened a distinguished men's clothing store (Chapps East Ltd.) with her life-long best friend, Sissy Schmidt. In 1984, Ann and Sissy decided to sell the business, and Ann then obtained her real estate license and proved to be a top agent her entire career - first with Rainey Jones & Associates, and then with Semonin Realtors. Her first priority was always her husband and her children, and she never missed a game, a horse show, or any event involving her kids. In 1972 Ann and Jack discovered Nolin Lake, fell in love with it, and bought land to enjoy on weekends. From a tent, to a converted school bus (fondly named the Silver Bullet), and finally a beautiful house on the property, Ann and Jack established a magical place to play, swim, boat, ski and fish. Most every weekend was spent at their "Piece of Heaven" and the memories will remain and continue with her children. A spiritual woman, Ann was a life-long member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and will forever be a beloved member of their parish.
Ann is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years, Jack Petty, and her parents Alice and Richard Vardell McLallen. She is survived by her loving children, R. Lance Petty (Audrey), Joanna Petty Flanigan (Danny) and Samuel Lucas Petty (Jessi); her siblings Martha McLallen Carrico, Ric Vardell McLallen, Linda McLallen Brandon, and James Pryor McLallen; her grandchildren, Nolan Thomas Petty, Benjamin Norman Joseph Flanigan, Madeline Tinsley Petty, Quillen Castleman Flanigan, Waylon Lucas Petty, Ledger Ranier Petty, Justus Shielding Petty, and numerous nieces and nephews - all who adored her.
A memorial service and reception will be held on October 14, 2023 at Noon at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Maple Lane, Anchorage, KY 40223.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Ann's favorite charities: Home of the Innocents, the Salvation Army, and the Franciscan Kitchen.
