Andrew P. Gies, Jr., 97, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2022. Andrew grew up in the west end and developed a love for baseball. He went onto play for Saint Xavier and played on the first state championship team in 1942. Andrew served his country in the US Navy during World War II. Andrew loved his family, spending time with his grandchildren; teaching them all he knew about baseball, golf, and card games. He was an avid Louisville Cardinal fan and was an avid horse racing enthusiast. He spent many years as a landscaping volunteer at Our Lady of Lourdes. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
He was born on January 25, 1925 in Louisville, Kentucky to Andrew and Esther (Klapheke) Gies. He is preceded in death by his father, Andrew P. Gies, Sr., mother, Esther K. Gies, wife, Helen Gies, sons, Thomas Gies, Marty "Martin" Gies, daughter, Barbara Peck, son-in-law, John Peck, son-in-law, Pat Warner, sister, Elizabeth Bell, brother, Leo Gies, and sister, Mary Schoenberg.
Andrew is survived by his loving family, children, Andy (Lynn) Gies, III, Carolyn (Luke) Donato, Carl (Kendra) Gies, Suellen Warner, Jayne (Jim) Woodring; Daughter-In-Law, Becky Gies; as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and extended family to cherish his loving memory forever.
Visitation will be on Monday, May 9, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, and Receptions, Southwest Louisville Chapel, 10304 Dixie Highway, and on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (508 Breckenridge Lane). A Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Louisville, KY.
The family requests that contributions in Andrew's memory be made to the American Heart Association or the Wounded Warriors Project.
