Alvin E "Red" Baumann, 84, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana passed away on Monday, March 11, 2013. Alvin retired from Thoroughbred Container in Louisville and was a past employee of Mead Paper Company. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church where he served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and Faith Formation instructor. He was member of the Christian Men's Program and fervently supported the youth ministry program. He was active in the Mount. St Francis Center for Spirituality Cursillo movement. Alvin served his country through the Indiana Army National Guard.
A generous and giving person, Alvin had served as Floyd County Councilman and supported the building of Floyds Knobs Community Club and baseball fields. He was instrumental in decisions to build a new firehouse in Floyds Knobs. In his love for people, he taught his children to serve others and to love people for their uniqueness. He was dedicated to athletics, enjoyed sports throughout his life, and was a fan of NAHS and IU basketball and football programs. His greatest memories were swimming and recreation at Blackiston Mill while growing up with his siblings. He was a loving father, grandfather, and godfather.
Alvin was born to the late William and Mabel (Sprigler) Baumann. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Catherine (Schmidt) Baumann; brothers, William and Richard Baumann; sister, Rita Haub his father and mother-in-law, John and Bertha (Kiesler) Schmidt.
He is survived by his children, Donna Irmscher (Bob), Gregory Baumann (Pam), Diane Thomas (Mark), Douglas Baumann, and Phyllis Naville (Daryl); siblings, Melvin Baumann, Mildred Barmore, Pat Haub, and Ruth Davis; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 PM Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with a Prayer Service at 3:30 PM Wednesday. There will be a visitation at 9:30 AM Thursday at St Mary of the Knobs Chapel followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 AM with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
