Allona (Harris) Young, 87, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
She was born March 3, 1935, to parents Rev. Robert and Ollie Mae Harris in Fulton, Kentucky. She was the fourth of their eight children. Allona grew up on a farm with her parents and siblings and had many experiences such as milking cows and helping with planting, harvesting, and canning.
Allona was proud to be a beautiful and skilled Majorette of the Riverview School's Band. After completing her required years of education, she attended West Kentucky Vocational School in Paducah, Kentucky, where she studied cosmetology and decided to become a beautician.
She graduated from West Kentucky Vocational School and left her hometown of Fulton, Kentucky, to start a new life in Louisville, Kentucky. She was drawn to Louisville because of better opportunities. There was also a tall, handsome man by the name of Benny Pearl Young, Jr., whom she met while attending West Kentucky Vocational School that also lived in Louisville. On July 26, 1956, Benny and Allona were united in marriage. To this union were born three children, daughters Veronica and Benita and son Timothy. Allona worked hard at both being a dedicated, caring, loving mother raising her children and being a loving wife.
Allona educated herself about using non-traditional ways to treat minor ailments, such as aches, pains, and skin issues. Aloe vera gel was her go-to treatment for lots of minor health issues for herself, and she told others about the benefits of aloe vera. Allona was a committed, lifelong learner.
After her husband passed in 1986, Allona returned to college and was so excited about learning. She attended Jefferson Community College, where she majored in psychology. It was a memorable experience for her.
Allona accepted Christ in her teens under the pastorship of Rev. Albert Brown and assistant pastor Rev. Robert Harris (her father) of Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Casey, Kentucky. She was a devoted and faithful member of Central Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and let her Christian light and the love of the Lord be known to everyone. She read her Bible daily and was an excellent example of a Christian woman.
