Allene Ruth Whitmer, a beloved mom, grandma, and cherished friend, peacefully departed this life at her home on December 28, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on June 10, 1928, in Alum Rock, Pennsylvania, Allene was the daughter of Clarence and Pearl Master, embracing a life full of love, care, and dedication to her family.
A remarkable woman, Allene shaped the lives of many, not just through her role as a mother, but as a community member. For 16 years, she served as a school bus driver for the Richland County School Systems in South Carolina, where she was known by all as Granny, showcasing her commitment to the safety and well-being of children. Beyond her professional life, she found immense joy in being a homemaker, pouring her heart and soul into caring for her family. Her dedication to her loved ones was evident in everything she did, from nurturing meals to warm hugs.
Allene had varied interests that highlighted her creative spirit. She spent countless hours crocheting beautiful pieces, tending to her flower garden, and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. Her strong faith guided her through life’s journey, and she attended Cornerstone First Church in Jeffersonville, Indiana, with heartfelt devotion. Allene also enjoyed the serenity of word search puzzles, which often kept her mind engaged and active.
She leaves behind her cherished family: her sons, Dave Whitmer, Don Whitmer, Tom (Becky) Whitmer, Eugene (Angela) Whitmer; her daughters, Sharon (Ray) Leamer, Kathy Smith, and Lori Field; her 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, who will remember her as a source of wisdom, love, and unwavering support. Allene's connections extended beyond her immediate family, as she is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom were touched by her kindness and generosity.
Her memory will be forever cherished, especially among those she held dear. Allene joins her late husband, Duane Whitmer, her beloved son, Tim Whitmer, and son in law, Walton Smith, along with her siblings: Elizabeth Ashbaugh, Harold Master, Meredith Aites, Evelyn Maloney, Faye Irwin, Ray Master, and Paul Master. Their legacy continues to live on through the stories and memories shared by those left behind.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home in Southern Indiana, with a another visitation Monday, January 6, 2025 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at the same location. A burial service will take place at Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, SC on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 1:00 PM.
Allene Ruth Whitmer lived a life rich with love and faith, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of her family and friends. Her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the lives she touched, a testament to a life well-lived.
