Joseph Lee Barnett

Joseph Lee "Joe" Barnett, 89, of Shelbyville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

He was the son of Shelby Barnett and Martha Martinie Barnett, who preceded him in death.

Joe was a Veteran, serving in Army Security Agency in Tokyo, Japan. He was a graduate of Campbellsburg (KY) High School, Hanover College (Hanover, IN) and the University of Kentucky.

Joe spent his career in education. He taught math at Trimble County (KY) High School, Shelby County (KY) High School and Southwestern High School (Hanover, IN) and Hanover College. He also coached basketball and baseball.

Joe loved his family, all sports, and time spent with family and friends. He was an avid UK fan. Joe loved the Lord; he was ordained a Baptist deacon and a member of Shelbyville First Baptist Church.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Sue Barnett, son, Jeff Barnett (Rebecca); daughter-in-law, Sondi Barnett; grandchildren: Elaina Barnett, Jonathan Barnett, Gabby Wagers and Sierra Cole and brother, David Barnett (Ruth).

Joe is also survived by his nephews, Tyler Barnett (Catherine), Mason Barnett, Ian Barnett and nieces: Adalyn Barnett, Carol Moore, Mary Garnett (Gig) Todt, Charlene Tuck (Jesse), Angela Smith (Kellen), Drew Landrowski and Anya Landrowski; sister-in-law, Lois B. Whaley; cousins Peggy Hunt (Kent) and Ann Griffin.

Joe's family wishes to thank Hosparus for the wonderful care they have given him, especially Jodi, Allie, and Todd and to the special caregivers Lisa and Wilma.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 from 1:00 pm until the time of the memorial service at 3:00 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243).
