Nancy Hughes Whalen. Our family lost a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend on Saturday, April 23, 2022. She passed away at home with her husband and children by her side. Nancy Hughes Whalen, age 86 is survived by her loving and caring husband, Jim Whalen.
She was born on September 3, 1935, in Lexington Kentucky, to her late parents John Andrew Hughes and Mary Virginia Hughes. She is survived by her sister, Juanita (James); 3 children Jerry (Vicki), Victor (Cathy), and Celeste; her 5 grandchildren, Melissa (Joe), Michelle (Tim), Daniel (Melinda), Michaela (Donnie), and Jacob (Kryn); and her 5 great-granddaughters, Josephine and Clementine, Gwendolyn, Tatum and Grace. She is preceded in death by her parents Andy and Mary Virginia, her sister Pearl and her brother Harold.
Nancy was a Sunday School teacher for many years and was a member of Southeast Christian Church while living in Louisville, Kentucky. She was an avid quilter, expert seamstress, chef, and home decorator. Her home was always filled with beauty and color. She was married to the love of her life for 69 years and first met her friend "Jim" when only 8 years old. She always looked forward to visits from her grandchildren and joyful great-granddaughters.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to her extraordinary caregivers (our extended family) over many years and during the last weeks. You helped provide a safe, loving environment for her and peace of mind for all of us. The family is also grateful for the assistance of Hosparus Health nurses and staff who helped at this difficult time.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 pm on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at Newcomer Cremation, Funerals & Receptions (235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243) with burial to follow at Floydsburg Cemetery in Crestwood, Kentucky.
