Joseph "Joe" Baines, 57, of La Grange, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Laura (Daley) Baines, his daughter, Katherine "Rachel" Baines, his sister, Pamela (Rice) Glover along with an extended family of nieces and nephews.
He was born on May 24, 1964 in Columbus, Mississippi to the late Edmond and Betty Sue (Green) Baines. He is also preceded in death by his son Christopher Paul Baines and sister Tammy Prescott.
Joe graduated in 1982 from Lamar County High School in Vernon Alabama. After high school, Joe enlisted into military service and went through basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky eventually joining Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Armor Training Brigade. Joe served in his unit as an M1A1 Tank Loader, Gunner and Driver as well as assisted in the training of incoming recruits. He also assisted the Army Corps of Engineers by test driving innovative military armor equipment until he was transferred in 1985 to the 1st Battalion, 33rd Armor in Gelnhausen, Germany where he served until his end of service in April of 1987. Before his end of service, Joe achieved the rank of E-5 (Sergeant) as well as earning the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Achievement Metal 3rd Armor and Good Conduct Medal.
After leaving the military, Joe returned to Mississippi and worked as a security manager for McRae's Department Store in Columbus, MS. In May of 1990, Joe married his wife Laura, who he met on a blind date at the enlisted men's club on post at Fort Knox. Joe and Laura celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary.
Joe and Laura relocated to Kentucky in 1992. After working for one year framing houses, Joe started his 20 year service industry career at Jarboe's Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, working as a journeyman plumber. Joe worked installing "new construction" gas lines eventually moving up to the entire "new construction" plumbing installation for new homes. This led to assisting the service portion of the company, troubleshooting and repairing existing damaged residential plumbing. Joe was well known among his peers for mentoring his fellow co-workers who were new to the industry. After leaving Jarboe's, Joe worked one year for DWB restoration then landed at Larry's Interior Trim & Deck, performing carpentry work for approximately 4 years.
Our beloved Joe was a brave, loving, devoted, kind husband and father, who is held in high regard by his peers. Joe's memory will be held deeply in the hearts of his family and friends.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until the time of the memorial service at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Newcomer Cremation, Funerals & Receptions (235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243).
