John A. Vereb, MSN, RN, CEN, SANE, 52, of Mount Washington, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020. He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in Mount Washington, KY.
John was born on January 19, 1968 in Gary, Indiana to John and Nancy Vereb. He was a graduate of LaPorte High School in LaPorte, IN. John served his country in the United States Army as a member of 10th Mount Division, 511th Military Police Company, Fort Drum, NY. For a time during his service John was assigned to Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, as part of the base security force. After the Army, he discovered his passion for nursing and achieved an Associate Degree in Nursing from Southwestern Michigan College, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing from McKendree University. He was also a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN).
In John's 27 year nursing career he was a leader, teacher, and mentor to countless nurses along the way and was extremely passionate about treating all patients with dignity and respect. John worked as a travel nurse which eventually brought him to Louisville, KY. Throughout his years in Louisville, he worked at University of Louisville Hospital as a Staff Nurse, Emergency Department; Clinical Nurse Manager, Emergency Psychiatric Services; and Charge Nurse, Inpatient Psychiatric Services; Norton Hospital as Nurse Manager, Emergency Department; Baptist Hospital East as Staff Nurse, Emergency Department; Kentucky Association for Sexual Assault Programs as Statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) and Response Team Coordinator. Additionally, he was previously a Clinical Instructor at Spencerian College and Jefferson Community and Technical College. Most recently, he worked as a RN Care Manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Newburg Clinic and was detailed to the Emergency Department in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
John was very outgoing, with a big personality, who loved to share stories and his wickedly good sense of humor. He shared his enthusiasm for all things Star Wars and found deep wisdom within it that strongly influenced his life. He was a fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, and Notre Dame Football, where he worked as a member of the Red Cross at football games for 3 years. John thoroughly enjoyed attending his son's baseball games, daughter's golf matches, and all of their school band concerts. He shared many adventures with his wife and said that he loved her more than Star Wars. Life was never boring with John, and his wish would be to leave you with a memory that makes you smile.
John is survived by his loving Wife of nearly 10 years, Angela Wells-Vereb, Children: Harrison Vereb, Conner Wells, Alayna Wells; Father, John Vereb; Brothers: Jeff Vereb (Kim) and Jason Vereb (Randall); Nieces and Nephews: Zach, Jake, Katelyn, Finley, Jaxon; Preceded in death by his Mother, Nancy Vereb.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - East Louisville, (235 Juneau Drive) with a private service to follow that will be recorded and shared. Visitors will be asked to stand in a socially distanced line and walk through the building in procession to pay their respects. Masks are required for entry. Please do not attend if you are ill or experiencing any COVID symptoms. The family sincerely appreciates all expressions of sympathy, but we ask you to refrain from any physical contact to minimize the spread of COVID.
