Mary Helen Vaughn

August 16, 1940 — August 12, 2020

Mary Helen (Romine) Vaughn, age 79, went home to be with her precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on August 12, 2020. She was born on August 16, 1940 in Lebanon, Kentucky.

Mary Helen graduated from Southern High School in 1958. She attended the University of Louisville and earned a BA in Music Education and also earned a Masters in Education from Murray State University in 1967.

Mary Helen taught with Jefferson County Public Schools for 30 years as a music and choir teacher and as a school counselor. She was a former organist at Southeast Christian Church and the pianist/organist at Fern Creek United Methodist Church. Mary Helen was a founding member of the Master's Men and served as their accompanist for over 40 years. She accompanied the Master's Men in conjunction with the Cuban National Choir and the Cuban National Orchestra during several mission trips to Cuba. She also accompanied more choirs, musicians, students and played more weddings than can be counted. Mary Helen was active with the Kentucky Music Educators Association. She served as president of Delta Omicron music fraternity of which she was a member for over 50 years. She was also the former chairman of the Southern High School class of 1958 reunion group.
Mary Helen met Robert while both were teaching at Southern High School. They married on April 9,1966 at Fourth Avenue Methodist Church in Louisville and were devoted to one another for 54 years. She was a wonderful mother to Chris, and twins Julie and Janie, and doted on her seven grandchildren. She treated her sons and daughter-in-law as her own. Mary Helen adored her older sister Martha and loved spending time with her.

Mary Helen was preceded in death by her loving parents, James Richard Romine and the former Alverda Bessie Vaughn Romine, and one grandson, Zachary D Vaughn.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert E Vaughn, son Christopher (Cathy) Vaughn, daughter Julie Clark, daughter Janie (Dan) Zehnder, sister Martha Curtis, grandchildren Cana Clark, Landen Clark, Ashton Zehnder, Riley Zehnder, CJ Vaughn and Casey Vaughn, and her nieces and nephew.

Visitation in Mary Helen's honor will be held on Saturday, August 15 from 2 to 8pm at
Newcomer, E. Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243, and on Monday, August 17, 2020 from 11am to 1pm at Hikes Point Christian Church, 2601 Hikes Lane, Louisville, Kentucky 40218. The funeral will follow Monday's visitation at 1pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HPCC Point Forward Campaign, Hikes Point Christian Church, 2601 Hikes Lane, Louisville, Kentucky 40218.
