Larry E Childers

January 16, 1940 — May 13, 2020

Larry E. Childers, age 80, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 13, 2020.

Larry was born on January 16, 1940 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late George and Helen (Hinkle) Childers. He spent most of his childhood summers with family in Eastern Kentucky, in the town of Richardson. He forged a bond with his cousin Sharon Kay Hinkle (Kinner) who became like a baby sister to him. His nurturing spirit would pave the way toward the father he'd become. At 19, Larry enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959 and served aboard the U.S.S. Valley Forge, aircraft carrier, serving our country all over Europe. He was honorably discharged as a disabled veteran in early 1961.

Larry married his beautiful bride, Nancy B. Davis, in Louisville, KY on September 23, 1961. Together they gave up city life for a more rural life in the country, just on the outskirts of Jeffersontown where they restored an old two-story Colonial style farmhouse. There they made their home, and raised two boys, Larry Jr. and John.

Larry always had a connection to the land. A self-proclaimed farmer, he planted crops every season--often with help from his father George--to sustain his family. He had a tremendous love for flowers and nature. He raised livestock: cows, chickens, pigs, and a random goat here and there.

He and his wife had a shared love of bowling, which began in the late '60s and continued for 30 years. Being legally blind never stopped him from being the very best in his class. Larry and Nancy traveled all over the country bowling in tournaments with their dear friends. He was inducted into the Greater Louisville Bowling Assn. Hall of Fame in 2013 and has won many awards and has made many contributions to the sport of bowling.

Larry never let the grass grow under his feet. Although he had physical limitations, he never let them stop him from achieving his goals. He would often be heard saying, "Can't never did anything".

A loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Larry will be missed by each and every one throughout his life who had the blessing of being in his presence. May the Lord rest his soul.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Childers, and sisters George Anne Sotsky (Childers) (George R. Sotsky) and Peggy E. McDowell (Childers) (Pat Ed McDowell).

Larry is survived by his brother, Frank Childers; sons, Larry Childers Jr. (Mary Alice), and John Childers; grandchildren, Amanda Childers, Larry Childers III, Joshua Childers; and great-grandchildren, Giovanni, and Cassius.
