W. John Shallenberger, 80, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019.
John grew up on a dairy farm near Cleveland, Ohio. As a young man, he was active in 4-H, exhibiting at the Geauga County Fair. John was a graduate of The Putney School in Vermont, where he was an enthusiastic member of their ski team. He served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea from 1959-1960. John graduated from Iowa State University in 1965 with a major in Dairy Science. While at Iowa State, he was active in the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
John was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying with his family. He volunteered in the communities where he lived, including work as a firefighter and a sheriff. His active role in the local VFW post was a source of particular pride to him.
John was born on February 2, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Carl Breithaupt and Alice Kranz Shallenberger. After Carl's death, John was adopted by the late Dr. David Shallenberger. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Carl W. Shallenberger and Alice Catharine "Kathy" Gray.
John is survived by his loving daughters, Ann K. Brea and Mona Lisa Janson; grandson, Zachery Thomas Brea; sister, Mary K. Shallenberger and former wife Barbara J. Janson.
A Celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019 from 6 pm - 10 pm at VFW Post 1170 (107 N Evergreen Road, Middletown, KY 40243).
