Stanley Riley Jr., 90, of Shelbyville, Kentucky went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 12, 2018.He passed away peacefully at his home.
He was born July 21, 1927 in Barren County, KY, to the late Stanley and Charlotte Louise Riley and was the eldest of eight children. Riley was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, T. Carol Riley, his son, Matthew William Riley, his siblings, John Riley, Cordell Riley, Russell Riley and Mary Keown.
He is survived by his four daughters, Stanalee (Johnnie) Gowin of Shelbyville, Ky, Stanadea (Matt) Riley-VanWaggoner of Park City, UT, Stanalouise Riley of Shelbyville, KY and Stanakay DiNapoli of Louisville, KY; seventeen grandchildren; siblings, Wayne (Edith), Perry (Darlene) Riley from Bowling Green KY and Leo (Shirley) Riley of Abilene, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Stanley, was known to his friends and family as "Riley". He had a larger than life personality, quick wittedness, strong sense of values & character, and an air of dignity of days gone by. He believed strongly in preserving the history of the past. He was a lifelong scholar of early American history, Genealogy, collector of early American antique tools and furniture. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Riley graduated from Glasgow High School and enrolled in college currently known as Western Kentucky University. He enlisted in the US Army in 1945, during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge, he moved to Louisville, Kentucky to begin his professional career. He was founder and CEO of Mason Dixon Auto Auction Company. He worked briefly at Ford Motor Company as Vice President of Operations. It was at that time he decided to be an entrepreneur and lifelong advocate of being a volunteer and community activist.
To highlight his legacy and his passion, he served as Deputy Civil Defense Director for Louisville and Jefferson County, Captain of Fern Creek Volunteer Fire Department, President of Louisville Democratic Party, President and CEO of Louisville Housing Authority, Founder of Mason Dixon Company, (of which he developed five subdivisions in Louisville), President of Union Housing Management and owner and operator of ICI Systems Inc.
He moved to Shelby County in 1981, where he remained until his death.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Newcomer, Cremations, Funerals and Receptions East Chapel (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243).
A Celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery Chapel in Bowling Green, KY, with Rev Steve Boyd presiding.
