Freda F. "Sis" (Lamb) Schmelz, 95, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2016. Freda was a faith-filled and loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, friend, and neighbor. She was a former parishioner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Albany where she had been an active member of the Holy Trinity Altar Society. A current member of Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany, she devoted her love and attention to her faith and to her family.
Freda was born on November 7, 1920, in Anawalt, West Virginia, to the late George W. and Anna (Perry) Lamb. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Herman W. "Bud" Schmelz; sons, William and Charles Schmelz; sisters, Evelyn Denhart and Beatrice Renn; brothers, Murray and Merle Lamb; son-in-law, Joe Gilkey; daughter-in-law, Janice (Rauck) Schmelz; and grandson, Norman Miller.
She is survived by her children, James Schmelz (Janet), Dorothy Gilkey, and Nancy Bierbaum (Dr. Harry); daughter-in-law, Sue Schmelz; sisters, Marie Wright, Gladys Jones, Jean Grose, and Donna Gibson; brothers, Gerald, Gale, and Gordon Lamb; 14 grandchildren, Martin, David, Daniel, Richard, Rob, Michael, and John Schmelz, Paul Gilkey, Karen McCartney, Pamela Slatten, Ruthie Watson, Mary Vareberg, Brian Miller, and Tina Williams; 35 great grandchildren; and 25 great great grandchildren.
Her Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 31, 2016, at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and on Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church (129 West Daisy Lane, New Albany) with burial to follow at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in New Albany.
Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or to Hosparus - the Community Hospice of Southern Indiana (502 Hausfeldt Lane, New Albany, Indiana 47150).
